Laughter and mockery are symptoms of unease, and there is great cultural unease about ‘aberrant’ bodies that challenge the certainty of male and female as mutually exclusive, complementary (some would argue preferably heterosexual) and thereby ‘wholesomely’ reproductive. If this is the case, then can one empathize with those who assert that the medically sanctioned destruction of tissue and organs – with life-long implications for gender identity, erotic sensation and possibly reproductive potential – that is infant sex assignment doubles as a culturally sanctioned construction of a favoured biology and anatomy?
