PTSD is such a hard thing to deal with on a daily basis, and I’m so sorry you are experiencing it (and had to undergo sexual assault). This is very important to remember. Achieving a yes after dozens of Nos is not the same as consent.

I Stand: A Celebration of Women

I was hoping you would let me take a moment to celebrate.

I Stand.

Taught me about Etta James rage screaming so the entire world can feel your Billy Holiday pain breaking down until you’re in the depths of Maya Angelou clarity, that you won’t crush your baby in the night and Lauryn Hill trust that your instincts will deliver what you Susan B. Anthony deserve.  Not subduing that Rosa Parks last nerve.  Being Grace Jones art that can’t be Billie Jean King denied.  And accept the Joan of Arc illumination in the Harriet Tubman night without tipping that Coco Chanel balance because ain’t it your Sojourner Truth right?  Never loose because you simply Benazir Bhutto can’t, and feed the broken people with your Ann Sullivan hands.  Taught me how to hold the Jane Adams door open, and take the Amelia Earhart leap and dance to your death with your Josephine Baker feet.  Drop the Fannie Lou Hamer on the front lines of humanity, Dolores Huerta lend them some instruction in their moral catastrophes.  And somewhere a face devoid of love or grace, needs an Emily Dickinson word, and though A wounded deer leaps highest, sometimes that wounded child needs a Ivelise Markovits turn.  Taught me about Coretta Scott King believing, and Eve Ensler creating, and before you even take a step, Terry Tempest Williams looking back and seeing.
